Recently we have been celebrating the vibrant volunteer culture in our faith family.

We asked a few of our volunteers to share some of their experiences, in hopes that we might better understand the heart of those who serve.

Meet Rachael Robertson

Q:What ways do you volunteer in our faith family?

A: I run the Drop-In Intercession Prayer Night on Monday nights, and I'm a member of the church board.

Q: What is your favourite part of your service?

A:I love being able to create a quiet place where people can focus on God and spend time praying for others. I love it when people tell me that their time on Monday night really helped them connect with God.

Q: Do you serve alongside others?

A: On the church board, I serve with five other board members, as well as our two pastors. It has been a great experience to learn from the other members of the church board. I didn't know anything about being a board member when I started, and now I have more experience, and I can gain wisdom from watching the other team members in action.

Q: What skills have you gained or what lessons have you learned while serving?

A: I have learned that it doesn't matter how small your ministry is...you have to be faithful to what you believe God has asked you to do.

Q: What might others find surprising about the role you play in our faith family?

A: People might find it surprising to know that the Monday night service is not a typical prayer meeting! Instead of a group of people sitting in a circle and praying out loud, the Monday nights feature a quiet sanctuary and the space to sit by yourself and bring your requests to God. There's no need to speak at all, if you don't want to. Also, there's no minimum time commitment: even if you only show up for five minutes, that is totally fine! That's what Drop-In is all about.

Q: Would you recommend volunteering to others?

A: Definitely! Getting involved is a great way to make connections with other people in the church. Also, volunteering is good practice in looking like Jesus: he didn't come to BE served, but to serve!

Q: What is your favourite book? activity?

A: I'm a big reader, especially of children's fiction. One of my favourite books is "Saffy's Angel" by Hilary McKay. Also, I love to go social swing dancing.

Q: What is your favourite food?

A: I adore summer fruits, like nectarines and cherries and raspberries. Also I'm a sucker for anything with goat cheese.

Q: Where do you dream of travelling?

A: Penticton. Every summer.

Q: What do you find encouraging?

A: Talking to people who love Jesus, who talk about him, who tell stories of what he is doing and saying in their lives. That always inspires me to keep going!

Q: Anything else you think we should know?

A: I feel privileged to be a part of Victoria Alliance Church. When I needed a church home, you all took me in with a warm welcome, and I'm delighted to be able to give back.
