Whenever I try something new I like to get some advice from folks who have done it before.  I'm not sure why, but it never dawned on me that this same truth might apply when it comes to reading the Bible.  Of course, it does!
I know that many in our faith family have begun this new year with a desire to spend more time consistently reading the scriptures.  So, before you jump into something new, it may be worthwhile learning some of the lessons from those who have gone before you.

Here are 6 Ways that may help you get the most out of a daily Bible reading program:

 1) Same Time:  Try to read each day at the same time of day.  Perhaps when you first wake up, or when you have coffee break.  Whatever time works, do your best to be consistent.

2) Same Place: It is not essential, but it can help in forming a lasting habit if you find a place you enjoy reading and try to read there every day.  Choose a comfortable chair, or a place where the sun streams in.  Wherever you are opening the Bible, God will meet you there.
3) Same language:  It can be challenging to read in a style of writing that you are not familiar with.  There are many modern translations available today, so take your time to select a translation that is both trustworthy and understandable.  If you want help with this, don't hesitate to ask.
4) Start with prayer: Before you read scripture, it can be helpful to pray.  Perhaps you'll pray:  God, build in me a deeper love for You and a deeper love for Your Word.  Or, maybe your prayer is simply: God, open Your word to me today.  Whatever your prayer, taking time to pray acknowledges that reading scripture is more than a task - it is an invitation into a place of relationship with God.
5) Write a note: You don't need to approach your reading as a study, but if something pops out for you, or if you notice something for the first time in a new way then take a moment to write yourself a note.  It could be in your Bible margin, journal entry, or on your program tracking sheet.  We tend to remember things we write down - so this simple step can really make a difference long term.
6) Take it easy:  This is not an entrance exam.  Reading scripture is like entering into a conversation with God - don't confuse it with a way you earn bonus points.  God's grace is for you completely - whether you read or not.  But, we have this beautiful gift in our hands.  Enjoy it.  There is no need to stress about a day missed here, or a reading sheet you don't complete.  Every minute you spend in scripture is a precious one.  Enjoy.
